Congo Square

Located in the southern corner of Louis Armstrong Park, Congo Square was used by slaves and free blacks throughout the 19th century for open markets, meetings, and the African dance and drumming celebrations which played a role in the development of jazz. Local voodoo practitioners still consider Congo Square a spiritual base and gather there for rituals.

Officially named Beauregard Square, Congo Square is paved in cobblestones and features large oaks and other ornamentals
