Berkeley County South Carolina Underwater Trail

Cooper River Underwater Heritage Trail

The 2 mile long Cooper River Underwater Heritage Trail is South Carolina's first underwater trail. Markers are placed at six different historical sites. A line is attached to the markers to guide divers to each site.

The six historic sites are:

  1. Strawberry Shipwreck: The reported remains of an 1781 British vessel carrying military supplies.

  2. Strawberry Ferry Landing: Strawberry Ferry was established in 1705 on the western branch of the Copper River. The brick rubble of the landing extends 20 yards from the riverbank.

  1. Pimlico Shipwreck: The remains of a large vessel. The size indicates offshore operation.

  2. Pimlico Barge: The well preserved remains of a barge.

  3. Mepkin Plantation Boat: The remains of a boat which was designed to carry heavy cargo.

  4. Mepkin Dock: An example of a typical wooden dock structure historically used by early riverside residences in South Carolina

Directions:

Cooper River Underwater Heritage Trail may be reached via charter, or private boats. A public boat landing (Durham Creek Landing) is located 2 miles downriver. To reach Durham Creek Landing from I26 east of Summerville, exit 199 and drive northwest on US17 for 6 miles and turn right onto County S-8-9. Durham Creek Landing is located on the left after crossing the bridge.
