Chicken Creek Canoe Trail

The 8.2 mile Chicken Creek Canoe Trail takes the paddler down the historic Santee River, through the fast moving confines of Chicken Creek and back onto the Santee and up Wambaw Creek to the bridge at Echaw Road.

Put in at McConnel's Boat Landing (FS 204F) and paddle down the Santee River for approximately 4 miles and enter Chicken Creek at the end of the first big "S" curve in the river. Follow Chicken Creek until if joins back into the Santee. Continue downriver 0.5 miles and turn right onto Wambaw Creek. From here paddle upstream to the bridge at Echaw Road. The landing is on the right. This trail is tidal influenced, plan your trip for 2-3 hours later than the posted high tide for Charleston Harbor.

Directions:

To reach Chicken Creek Canoe Trail from Charleston, travel Hwy 17 north to McClellanville and turn left at the blinking caution light onto Hwy 45 (French Santee Road). Drive 4 miles and turn right onto Mill Branch Road (FS Road 211). Travel 5.5 miles and turn left onto Echaw Road. Travel 4 miles and turn right onto McConnell's landing Road (FS 204 F).
